Jonathan Rea is in a really good shape after a perfect weekend in Donington in which he got championship lead and seems to be strong also in Laguna Seca where he dominated first session of free practice being impressively fast. Kawasaki rider has been indeed the only rider alongside Tom Sykes to rode under the 1.24, with the Briton having a big gap on championship leader as long as he was half of a second slower.

Third place for Toprak Razgatlioglu, with the Turkish being again fast and consistent ahead of Sam Lowes, slower than just 0.044s; the two are the first guys to ride over the 1.24 and they are followed by Michael Van Der Mark. Overall a good session for the Dutch, considering he is still recovering from the injury suffered in Misano.

First Ducati in time sheet is Chaz Davies in 6^th ahead of his teammate Alvaro Bautista, who has a gap of over a second from Jonathan Rea; Laguna Seca seems to be a not very good track for the Ducatis for the moment giving to Rea a big chance to increase his lead. Loris Baz is 8^th followed by Marco Melandri, with Leon Haslam ending the top 10.
