Envision Virgin Racing driver Sam Bird won after an exciting race and a late safety car phase at the 2019-20 Formula E season-opening Diriyah E-Prix ahead of Porsche’s Andre Lotterer and Mercedes’ Stoffel Vandoorne as both took their debut podiums in Saudi Arabia.
The Briton used a comparative attack mode strategy to go up from fifth. Sam who scored his ninth career in Formula E as he scored his first win in 2014 in Malaysia EPrix. Robin Frijns and Nyck de Vries finished on P5 and P6.
Strong race Frijns, De Vries falls back a bit, the fourth position eventually went to Oliver Rowland, who also managed to climb strongly forward. The same applies to Frijns, who eventually climbed from start position 12 to the fifth position.
The Dutchman drove a tactically strong race, started Attack Mode well and, after the safety car, took full advantage of the opportunistic catching-up attempt that De Vries took at Sims.
However, D’Ambrosio finished ninth behind Sims, with Mitch Evans rounding out the top 10 ahead of Pascal Wehrlein.
Lucas di Grassi finished 13th from 19th on the grid after a tough race for Audi, with da Costa finishing 14th.
Reigning champion Jean-Eric Vergne retired at the end of lap 22 with an apparent steering arm issue.
The other retirements were Sebastien Buemi, who retired in the pits after briefly stopping on track on lap three, and Nico Muller, who failed to take the start for Dragon Racing.
