FE | Rome E-Prix 2022 | Invincible Evans conquers the win ahead of Frijns and Vandoorne
Despite starting ninth in the grid, Mitch Evans gets to grab the win for the second time in his career ahead of Frijns and Vandoorne.
In the streets of Rome, determination can be the key to go and catch a win, even if you start from the middle of the grid. This is the lesson Mitch Evans gave to pole sitter Stoffel Vandoorne, who slid in third place, and Robijn Frijns, who arrived second.
At the feet of the podium, we can find last year’s winner Jean-Eric Vergne on DS TECHEETAH, who managed to firmly held his fourth position against Sam Bird and his teammate Antonio Felix da Costa.
This time, Nyck de Vries was unlucky and needed to retire from the race, due to a problem. In fact, the Dutchman slowed on track so he slipped down.
Local hero Antonio Giovinazzi raced a bit better but without any big improvements. He managed to take home a 18th race, remaining in the back of the group, as he seems to still be adjusting to Formula E and its street circuits.

The race has been challenging and unpredictable. It started with Vandoorne in pole, defending his place from Frijns. In the meanwhile, Rowland hit the barrier in Turn 7 as he had Mortara pushing him from behind. At this point, the Safety Car came in, due to another crash by Turn 11 by e.dams’ Gunther.
At this point, Vandoorne is still leading, followed up by Frijns and De Vries third. Da Costa from his fouth place used the ATTACK MODE to close the gap from the top-three drivers. Frijns thought the time was right to make a move on Vandoorne, overcoming him. The two Mercedes-EQ drivers used ATTACK MODE too, with the Belgian arriving second after Frijns. The two drivers continue to switch places, and in the meanwhile, Evans pulled in on Dennis, who slipped down.
Less than 14 minutes to the end, de Vries started to have problems and Evans used his extra attack mode to bump in, taking the lead on de Vries, Frijns and Vandoorne. The race was extended by 5 minutes and 15 seconds for the Safety Car, and Vergne is fighting for the third position, getting it for a whie before losing it.
It’s the final lap: Evans is still the leader and he has Frijns and Vandoorne behind to catch his second win in Rome. At least until tomorow.
