Fernando Alonso climbed his way from P19 to P10 and drove one of his best races of the season at the Red Bull Ring in Austria.

The Spaniard delivered consistent top ten results leading up to the race- eighth in FP1, eighth in Sprint Qualifying, and fourth in FP2, however the Alpine driver, faced a significant setback at the start of the Sprint Race when an electrical issue on his A522 prevented him from competing in the Sprint Race.

After starting the Austrian Grand Prix from the back of the grid, Alonso charged his way into the top ten and managed to secure a point for Alpine. Teammate Esteban Ocon finished fifth and their combined efforts in the race moved Alpine up in the Constructors' standings and they are now tied with McLaren at 81 points.

The two-time world champion described how the ace unfolded and revealed that he was satisfied with the performance and pace of the A522 from the beginning of the race.

“One point is better than nothing considering we started on the back row today. I think it was one of my best races this season, other than probably at Silverstone last weekend,” Alonso said.

“It was a tricky race at the beginning. We were all in a DRS train and that was quite difficult to overtake. But I felt so much faster than the cars around so in a way I'm very pleased and upbeat about the car performance today because cars that we are fighting normally with... today they were really slow compared to our pace so that's a very good sign.

The first stint of the race ran smoothly for Alonso until a minor clash with AlphaTauri’s Yuki Tsunoda occurred on lap 35.  During a wheel to wheel to battle between Alonso and Tsunoda the Alpine driver showed his animated side and waved a finger in disapproval when the Japanese diver forced him off track.

“I was in the grass so I don't know why he was pushing me that far. You know, because I mean I was with a DRS in the grass keep flat out and there was no way to defend you know, I mean I was already side by side so I don't know I felt that those kinds of things is better to avoid at 300 kph but it it was okay.”

Alonso pushed his way into the middle of the top ten after pitting on lap 57 but an extra pit stop was needed immediately after when the Spanish driver felt tyre vibrations. The extra pit stop ultimately cost Alonso more points and a possible top six result.

“I think we were fighting for sixth or seventh position, but then there were some strange vibrations on the tyres we fitted after our second stop under the Virtual Safety Car.”

“I felt huge vibrations on the tyres immediately after the first sector. So, we decided to pit again I was actually P14. Nine laps to go and I recovered until we pitted again.

“As it was still under the VSC, we decided to stop again for another new set of tyres. Unfortunately, we lost some positions with this extra pit-stop and had to fight back on the last few laps.”

Damage limitation aside, Alonso focused on the positives of the race- the strong race pace of the A522 and the team’s hard work that helped him bring home another strong race result of the saeson.

“In the end we managed to take tenth position. Ultimately, only one point from this race feels a little bit of a shame for me, but we can be very happy with our overall pace and performance as a team this weekend.”
