Alfa Romeo’s head of trackside engineering, Xevi Pujolar, now expects the team to fight the likes of McLaren and Alpine for the top of the midfield.

After two tough years, Alfa Romeo’s start to the 2022 season has had its best start to a season for ten years, with the team holding sixth in the constructors’ championship and only six points behind Alpine as the Formula 1 circus arrives in Silverstone for next weekend’s British Grand Prix.

During the post-race session in Montreal, of which MotorLAT were in attendance, Pujolar feels that Silverstone will be a track that favours the C42. But the Spaniard also believes that to challenge Alpine consistently, the team will need to get both cars into Q3.

“I think we can expect to be fighting at the top of the midfield; again, we don’t know if some teams will bring some packages for Silverstone but so far, I would say we’ve been pretty consistent on all the different types of tracks and air efficiency so for the next couple of the races we expect to be fighting at the top of the midfield with Alpine and McLaren.

"Double points are our target, but we want to be in a position to be in Q3 with both cars, and that’s the way we can then fight solid races with Alpine.”

Reliability issues have plagued the team since the start of the season, with Zhou Guanyu retiring from three races whilst lead driver Valtteri Bottas has had several technical issues on Friday, forcing him to miss Practice sessions.

But Pujolar now believes the reliability issues that hindered the team are behind them as he expects Silverstone to be an even better weekend for the Hinwil-based outfit.

“We had some incidents at the beginning of the season and then just to catch up with all the production of the spare parts from the packages we were running and in parallel having the production of the new packages that’s something that has been the limitation.

"From Silverstone onwards, we’re in a good position; also, we were taking some margin (on) these kinds of tracks such as Baku, here Montreal and Monaco when you’re close to the walls just to make sure that if we have some damage on Friday, we don’t want to face the consequences later on so now it will be better for the next few races.”
