Before the season finale in Abu Dhabi MotorLat had access to an online media meeting with Haas driver Mick Schumacher. The young driver talked about his first year of F1, a year of learning with a car that was not developed since Haas focused all their efforts on the upcoming 2022 season.

When MotorLat asked him what was the most important thing he learned this year, Mick said, “I´d probably go for the tyres. Obviously, the tyres are very special in Formula 1. It´s something which is not really in any other category the way that we have it, obviously, with the tyres blankets and the way the window is formed when you are out of the window or if you are over the window it will be very different and the feedback you get from the car would be very different. So, yes, I think that´s probably the part which I´ve learnt the most from.”

By the end of the season, Mick closed the gap with their most immediate competitors during qualifying. When he was asked about where this progress come from and how would this experience improve his results if he could go back to Bahrain Mick said: 

“I think it comes down to both the team and I working even better together and just figuring out what to give to get the right response and also the right changes in terms of setup. So, think in that sense We really figure it out our way and that will also help us for next year in many ways. So, I think that If I would go back to Bahrain now maybe we would start stronger and even closer and maybe therefore be closer for the whole season and towards the end of the season pick up more and be more in front of the others.”

On the changes he thinks he needs to make to prepare himself for his second season compared to how he prepared for the first, Schumacher explained: 

“I think the preparation would be different in the sense that I know what is expected of me. I have a clear view of what I need to do and obviously I think therefore the preparation would obviously adapt and change in what ways I can´t tell you because I´ll figure that out as I go. I don´t think there´s a clear and strict plan but it´s more what I feel that I need at that specific moment to be ready for the first year, that new concept of a car.”

On 2022 approach “There will be more to expect and also I expect of myself. So, hopefully, I´ll be able to make the step as in the past. I´m quite sure of that. So, let´s get started and we´ll find out on the way.”

What´s on Mick´s Christmas list? “On my Christmas list I would say points for next year, top one, and hopefully we´ll have a good time next year and I think the main important one on my list is health and happiness for everybody.”
