The quiet before ‘The Plan’: before 2021 dream teams revolution and other update on the market moves
Giorgio Terruzzi’s piece on the Italian Corriere della Sera could be one the revolutionary bombs for the 2021 campaign: a switch where Hamilton, Verstappen, Mercedes and Red Bull are trying to get an agreement on. And the operation involves even the Cavallino
Lewis and Max are said to have offered their 2021 season to Ferrari, with both receiving a denial: at Maranello the asset Leclerc cannot be put under discussion, it’s the future cycle for the team as Schumacher was in 1996.
So, the Dutch and the Briton looked each other as partners: swapping their seats with the collusion of their actual teams and the Liberty Media approval.
Doing so, Hamilton could pursue the dream of chasing and overtaking Schumi in being the most successful multi-champion on three different teams. On the other hand, Verstappen could step up to a bigger reality as Mercedes, where being able to exploit all his talent.
Fantasy. Probably nothing more: but it will be spicy enough for dreaming it. Let’s have a look at the update for the next season before to put the cart before the horse.
Mercedes
Toto Wolff’s decision on who to keep between Bottas and Ocon, can probably be regarded as the most difficult of all the teams: whatever his decision would be, one of the two drivers will be lost from Mercedes. Moreover, in case of confirm from Finn, Esteban is likely to accept the proposal of Gene Haas to join the American team: the only restriction clearly outstated at microphone is the one of ending the relationship with Brackley; Steiner doesn’t wants to keep the French until he will grab enough experience to give it back to the German manufacture.
Renault
Rumours are mounting on Hulkenberg: it is said that the German is trying to ask the same economic treatment of Ricciardo, with team principal Cyril Abiteboul discomforted after the podium thrown away in Nico’s home Grand Prix.
Haas
Judgement for Romain Grosjean is still pending: the idea of promoting Giovinazzi to a mid-field team for letting space to Mick Schumacher at Alfa Romeo, should be aborted due to the not satisfying completely performances of both drivers. Status quo could be the solution if a deal with Hulkenberg (“an interesting option” were Gunther Steiner words) couldn’t lead to an end; even Ocon’s path seems to lose chances: “Haas isn’t a team […] where other teams can loan drivers to let them grow” added.
The other option, Sergio Perez, is always a valid decision, for his solid sponsor intake and for his experience; the partner of the Mexican can guarantee him to be a zero-cost driver and his figure is seen as strategical for the South States of USA, being F1 lacking an American driver.
Toro Rosso
If Gasly could be moved back from the main team (as Daniil Kvyat in 2016), another desired option could be promoting the F2 driver Luca Ghiotto: as an Italian driver and one of the few who owns the F1 Super-Licence, could be a good move for Faenza.
Williams
Months ago, some hard reactions of Robert Kubica towards the good performances of teammate Russell, pointed out that inside Grove tensions are mounting between the Polish and the team establishment; some allusions to the disparity of performances are the sign that Robert and his partner are looking around for better opportunities: the national oil company PKN Orlen, through the words of its CEO, admitted that contacts with other teams are in place. If #88 would leave Frank’s squad, the wealthy Canadian Nicholas Latifi and Italian Ghiotto are on the shopping list of daughter Claire, both being positively evaluated in test sessions in the past.
