MotoGP | #FrenchGP | Quartararo clinches pole position at home race
Fabio Quartararo takes pole position at his home grand prix at Le Mans in changing track conditions ahead of teammate Maverick Vinales and Jack Miller completes the front row.
Fabio Quartararo took pole position at his home race at Le Mans with Maverick Vinales just behind to make it a Yamaha one-two for tomorrow’s race.
The Frenchman secured top spot for the French Grand Prix in a qualifying session where conditions were changing all the time.
This is now the second consecutive pole position at his home grand prix after following his old team with risking slick tyres.
During Q1, championship leader Pecco Bagnaia had to fight his way into Q2 along with other big hitters like Aleix Espargaro and the two Suzukis of Joan Mir and Alex Rins.
The track was wet which mixed the pack up a bit and this meant that Lorenzo Savadori and Luca Marini both progressed into Q2.
As soon as Q2 came around, the track seemed to be drying out but not many riders want to risk putting on slick tyres just yet - apart from the two Petronas Yamaha bikes.
Some of the riders then came straight back into the pits, having not set a lap, to change onto slicks as they considered it to be dry enough. One of the first riders to do so was Quartararo.
The quick thinking of him and his team made sure he got pole position with a 1:32.600s at his home race. He will be joined by his teammate Vinales in second place and Jack Miller completes the front row.
Franco Morbidelli, one of the first to go out in the session on slicks, will start tomorrow’s race in fourth place, Frenchman Johann Zarco will start in fifth and Marc Marquez will complete the second row in sixth place equalling his best qualifying place this season.

Takaaki Nakagami will start in seventh place with fellow Honda rider Pol Espargaro in eighth despite a crash in Q2. Valentino Rossi starts in ninth place.
Miguel Oliveira qualified in 10th, Lorenzo Savadori in 11th and Luca Marini in 12th place.
Aleix Espargaro will start tomorrow’s race in 13th place with the two Suzukis of Mir and Rins behind in 14th and 15th.
Championship leader Bagnaia starts in 16th place followed by the two Tech3 KTMs - Danilo Petrucci in 17th and Iker Lecuona in 18th.
Alex Marquez starts in 19th, Tito Rabat in 20th, Brad Binder in 21st and Enea Bastianini rounds out the grid in 22nd place.
The MotoGP race will start at 14:00 local time - will Quartararo convert pole position into a win or will there be incoming rain which will mix up the field?
