MotoGP | #PortugueseGP | Quartararo Dominates in Portimão!
Monster Energy Yamaha’s Fabio Quartararo maintained Yamaha’s 100% win record so far this season! Francesco Bagnaia and Joan Mir battled for the remaining podium positions.
Preparado, pronto e vai at the Algarve International Circuit as championship leader Johann Zarco stormed into the lead in the early laps, as Maverick Viñales slid right back down the order into 20th position by the first corner.
As Viñales’ struggles continue, Zarco controlled the race from the front, holding off Alex Rins, Joan Mir and Jack Miller. As the Team SUZUKI ECSTAR duo and the Ducati Lenovo man chased down the Frenchman, Repsol Honda’s Pol Espargaro, who took a heavy fall during yesterday’s sessions, retired from last position due to a rear brake failure.
As the chase at the front continued, Ducati Lenovo’s Miller slid out of contention at Turn 3, visibly angered by the error, but fortunately uninjured. Home hero Miguel Oliveira crashed out at Turn 14. The Red Bull KTM Factory man also walked away from the incident uninjured, but undoubtedly disappointed not to repeat his successes from last year’s #PortugueseGP.
On lap 10, Fabio Quartararo took the lead, as Rins remained hot on his heels. Marc Marquez, who made an aggressive start to his race, settled into 9th position battling for 8th with Aleix Espargaro. As the battled began to heat up at the front, Alex Marquez, Luca Marini and Valentino Rossi battled for 10th position. As Rossi took the advantage over Rookie of the Year contender Marini, he unfortunately crashed out a few corners later, however The Doctor walked away unscathed.
As Rins took the challenge to Quartararo he managed to obliterate the race lap record, with a blistering time of 1:39.450. Rins’ hopes of winning the #PortugueseGP were dashed as he crashed out on lap 18, chasing down Quartararo.
Championship leader, Zarco was battling with Francesco Bagnaia and Mir, as he crashed out on lap 20. This left Ducati Lenovo’s Bagnaia and Team Suzuki ECSTAR’s Mir to duke it out for 2nd and 3rd positions, as Petronas Yamaha SRT’s Franco Morbidelli continued to closes the gap.
Quartararo began his final lap with a 4.9s lead over Bagnaia and Mir, as the resurgent Morbidelli hunted down the podium. Yamaha maintained their 100% win record this season, as Fantastic Fabio breezed to victory, with Bagnaia and Mir finishing 2nd and 3rd respectively. Top Independent rider of the #PortugueseGP was Morbidelli who finished 4th. All 6 manufacturers managed to finish inside the Top 7 at the #PortugueseGP.
Reigning Moto2 World Champion, Enea Bastianini strengthened his fight for Rookie of the Year, finishing 9th, making this his 2nd top 10 finish in his MotoGP career.
Repsol Honda’s Marquez, who last finished a MotoGP race over 500 days ago, rode a strong race, through incredible pain, to finish 7th. Marquez was visibly in pain when he returned to the box, but put up a valiant effort to secure this top 10 finish.
LCR Honda IDEMITSU’S Takaaki Nakagami sat out yesterday’s qualifying session, due to shoulder pain caused by an unbelieveably fast crash during Friday’s Free Practice sessions. Nakagami rode a stellar race to a heroic 10th, holding off Viñales at the line.
The 4th round of the MotoGP World Championship will be held in Spain at the Circuito de Jerez – Angel Nieto, a circuit where Quartararo has previously been victorious. Can anyone halt Monster Energy Yamaha’s momentum?
