Alex Rins narrowly missed out on pole, posting a lap time of 1:38.951, meaning he will line up 2nd ahead of tomorrow’s Grand Prix. Championship leader Johann Zarco took the final spot on the front row, despite a small crash during Q2, setting a time of 1:38.991.
Ducati Lenovo’s Jack Miller will head the second row, starting from 4th, having made steady progress throughout the weekend. Petronas Yamaha SRT’s Franco Morbidelli will start the #PortugueseGP from 5th on the grid. Repsol Honda’s Marc Marquez qualified 6th, shocking the world on his return to MotoGP, after battling through Q1.
Aprilia Racing Team Gresini rider Aleix Espargaro will head the third row, starting from 7th. Top Rookie Luca Marini qualified in 8th, his best qualifying position so far in his MotoGP career. Team Suzuki ECSTAR’s Joan Mir only managed to qualify 9th, after battling through Q1.
Red Bull KTM Factory Racing’s Miguel Oliveira had a small crash during the Q2 session, however he managed to qualify 10th. Ducati Lenovo’s Francesco Bagnaia had his fastest time, which would have stolen pole, cancelled due to a yellow flag infringement, his next best lap placed him 11th on the grid. Monster Energy Yamaha’s Maverick Viñales had a disappointing qualifying session, finishing 12th.
LCR Honda IDEMITSU rider, Takaaki Nakagami decided not to take part in today’s qualifying session due to shoulder pain stemming from a crash on the opening day. Nakagami and the trackside medical team will assess his condition tomorrow morning and decide whether or not he will take part in the race. After a heavy crash during the FP3 session, Pramac Racing’s Jorge Martín has been declared unfit to continue with the #PortugueseGP. Having been transferred to hospital, Sky Sports reported a fractured ankle and metacarpal fractures which will require surgery for Martín.
Tomorrow’s #PortugueseGP is set to be a thriller. Can Oliveira pull off the greatest comeback to live his dream twice? Will the Yamaha riders steal the show, to maintain their 100% win record this season? Can championship leader Johann Zarco finally steal his maiden victory?
