Maverick Vinales became the sixth different race winner this season at the Emilia Romagna Grand Prix after heartbreak for Pecco Bagnaia as he crashed out of the race. Joan Mir finished second place and Pol Esapargaro completed the podium positions.

It was Vinales who qualified in pole position and started on the top spot for the start of the race with Jack Miller and Fabio Quartararo alongside the Spaniard on the front row.

It was Miller who led into turn one but it was not long until Vinales got back out in front and started to pull away a bit.

A lap one incident between Aleix Espargaro and Franco Morbidelli saw Espargaro go down which almost took down last week’s race winner. Morbidelli managed to stay on his bike but was demoted right to the back of the field with Espargaro out of the race.

On lap two and three of the race Valentino Rossi and Brad Binder both fell off their bikes and rejoined the race at the very back of the pack. Binder crashed out a second time and it was the end of the race for the South African.

Bagnaia, who looked fast all weekend, was closing in on the leader and passed Vinales on lap six. He then was starting to open up a gap between himself and the Yamaha man.

On lap nine, Miller rolled down pit lane and ended his race due to a mechanical issue with his Pramac Ducati bike.

Tito Rabat crashed out of the race on lap 13 and that was the end of his race weekend.

The field started to spread out as Bagnaia pulled more of a gap over Vinales in second place, who had a gap of over two seconds on the KTM man Pol Esparagro.

Rossi retired his bike on lap 17 of the race after trying to get back through the pack due to his crash early in the race.

A dramatic twist in the race happened on lap 21 as the race leader Bagnaia crashed out of the race at turn 6. A disaster for the Pramac team who were on track to win their first ever MotoGP win.

Quartararo was closing up on Pol Espargaro in second place as the Yamaha man was trying to get the pass done with five laps to go. Every lap Quartararo was behind the KTM, Joan Mir was getting closer on his Suzuki.

Mir got past Quartararo and then got past Espargaro for second place on lap 26 with Quartararo following the Suzuki into third place.

Iker Lecuona crashed out on the penultimate lap with Quartararo receiving the long lap penalty for exceeding track limits - this meant Espargaro finished third place for his second podium of the season.

Quartararo was demoted to fourth place with Miguel Oliveira finishing the race in fifth place.

Nakagami finished top Honda in sixth place with Repsol Honda rider Alex Marquez just behind him in seventh place - his best finish of the season.

Championship leader Andrea Dovizioso finished in eighth place, last week’s winner Morbidelli in ninth and Danilo Petrucci rounded out the top 10.

Zarco, Rins and Smith all finished behind the top 10 with only 13 riders completing the race.

Dovizioso still leads the championship after this weekend but only by one point from both Vinales and Quartararo. Mir is in fourth place in the championship but only four points behind the leader.

We head to Spain next weekend for the Catalunya Grand Prix which will be an exciting race to look forward to with the top four in the championship covered by four points.
