MotoGP | Austrian GP | Race: Dovizioso is back after an horrific crash which forced a red flag
Andrea Dovizioso is back in business in Austria at the end of a chaotic and scary race conditioned by a red flag due to an horrific incident between Johann Zarco and Franco Morbidelli
Andrea Dovizioso is back in town in Austria and he is officially a Title contender! The Italian from Ducati clinched his first 2020 win at the end of a chaotic and scary MotoGP race splitted in two parts as we had a red flag during the 9th lap due to an horrific incident between Franco Morbidelli and Johann Zarco.
The two guys collided in the straight between turn 2 and 3, with the French who changed direction before braking. The Italian could not do anything to avoid him and the two crashed down, with their bikes still running as bullets.
Everyone was extremely lucky as Johann Zarco and Franco Morbidelli walked up with their feet, but at the same time Valentino Rossi and Maverick Vinales were not hit by Zarco and Morbidelli’s bikes, with both passed really close to Rossi and Vinales both.
After the second start, Jack Miller tried to create a gap on the others, but Alex Rins and Andrea Dovizioso were immediately able to close it. Meanwhile, Pol Espargaro made a superb job in the first start taking the lead, but in the second one lost position lap after lap.
Things went from bad to worse for the Spaniard as Pol collided with Miguel Oliveira at turn 4 as Espargaro went wide and joined the track hitting KTM Tech 3 rider. A real shame for KTM who could achieve another podium but ended with their riders down and Brad Binder 4th.
Just one lap after KTM’s clash, Andrea Dovizioso took the lead on Jack Miller and Alex Rins. The Spaniard from Suzuki tried a move on Dovi later but ended up on the gravel as a mistake ruled him out of the race.
That meant free road for Andrea Dovizioso, who had free space to win the race ahead of Joan Mir and Jack Miller. Indeed, Rins’ teammate brought Suzuki to the podium after a battle against Miller where the Australian made a mistake at the penultimate corner. It is the maiden one for Mir, who conquered his first win in Austria when he was running in Moto3.
5th is Valentino Rossi ahead of Takaaki Nakagami, Danilo Petrucci and Fabio Quartararo. Championship Leader made a huge mistake after the red flag going wide at turn 4 rejoining the track from the back of the grid. In the second start, Frenchman was forced to start from behind and made a stunning comeback trying even a last corner attack on Danilo Petrucci.
9th Iker Lecuona, with Maverick Vinales 10th. The number 12 had a terrific second start where he even was 20th at the end of first lap. 11th place for Aleix Espargaro ahead of Michele Pirro, Alex Marquez, Bradley Smith and Cal Crutchlow.
