MotoGP | AustrianGP | Day 1 Combined Times
As the rain fell over the Red Bull Ring circuit, P. Espargaro remained quickest on day 1, followed by Dovizioso and Nakagami. With rain forecast for tomorrow’s Free Practice and Qualifying sessions, will FP1 prove more valuable than we expected?
By the midpoint of the FP2 session, Oliveria lead the way from A. Espargaro, however, they were the only two riders on track. In the closing minutes of the FP2 session, as a number of riders set flying laps, it was Miller who topped the session overall with a 1:26.475, followed by Rookie of the Year contender Lecuona and Oliveria hanging onto 3rd.
Over the combined times on day 1, P. Espargaro remains the fastest, followed by Dovizioso and Nakagami.
Rins placed 4th this morning’s FP1 session, followed by Morbidelli in 5th, after a difficult morning for the Yamaha camp.
Zarco placed 6th, after an incredibly impressive CzechGP, he will aim to repeat his success this weekend. Oliveira impressed over this morning’s FP1 session to place himself 7th.
Pramac Racing’s Miller placed 8th overall, despite being fastest in the challenging conditions in FP2. Mir, who was on the pace throughout FP1, had his fastest lap cancelled due to a yellow flag infringement, therefore he found himself in 9th at the end of the session.
Championship leader, Quartararo placed 10th in this morning’s FP1 session and appeared calm throughout FP2, however he did not set a time until late on in the session.
If the rain continues into tomorrow morning’s FP3 session, these FP1 times could be more important than ever. This would mean that Rossi, Viñales, Petrucci, Crutchlow and A. Espargaro could find themselves battling through Q1 for a place in Q2.
