Tricky Conditions but Vinales Tops FP3
Maverick Vinales topped the FP3 session in tricky track conditions with Marc Marquez just behind.
Strong winds, spots of rain and a red flag were the dominant factors during the FP3 session at the Australian Grand Prix in Philip Island, as riders were only starting to set times with five minutes to go.
Due to the conditions, no one went faster during the session which means the combined times are not affected and still stand.
Only 12 riders went out on track and set times during the morning free practice which gives you an indication of how tricky the conditions were.
Maverick Vinales topped the time sheets on his M1 Yamaha with a 1.31.338, much slower than the combined times in FP1 and FP2.
Marc Marquez finished second in the session, the Spaniard was flying around for the last ten minutes and was comfortably sitting top spot until he was knocked off at the last moment by Vinales.
Pol Espargaro finished FP3 in third place and Johann Zarco, who replaces Takaaki Nakagami on the second LCR Honda bike, finished fourth.
Jack Miller finished in fifth place and despite his big off yesterday, Fabio Quartararo got back on his bike and finished the session in a solid sixth place.
Mika Kallio on the second of the factory KTM’s finished seventh, with Alex Rins in eighth and Pecco Bagnaia ninth.
Karel Abraham rounds out the top ten in the session and Franco Morbidelli finished just outside it.
Cal Crutchlow set a time but it was 16 seconds off the top time.
MotoGP qualifying starts at 15:05 circuit time.
