Pato O’Ward topped second practice for the GMR Grand Prix for Arrow McLaren SP ahead of his old adversary Alex Palou.
Colton Herta went third quickest on the Indy Road Course just half a tenth slower than O’Ward.
IndyCar reigning champion Alex Palou topped the timesheets early on with a 1:11.1843 keeping up the momentum from Practice 1.
Dalton Kellett spun into the gravel bringing out the red flags with 38 minutes to go. Rookie David Malukas went through the gravel trap in order to avoid the Canadian.
Following the red flag Rinus VeeKay set the quickest time with a 1:11.0547 for Ed Carpenter Racing.
The Dutchman’s effort was soon beaten by Scott McLaughlin who continued his impressive start to the 2022 season.
The times continued to tumble as Colton Herta set a 1:10.7720 after a very quiet outing in the first Practice session.
Jimmie Johnson caused the second red flag of second practice as he spun into the gravel costing himself valuable track time.
Herta ran wide at Turn 12 in the Andretti Autosport but managed to continue during Practice.
Jack Harvey was the first driver to use the alternate tires and immediately set the quickest time with a 1:10.971.
Josef Newgarden had a problem with the clutch and couldn’t leave the pit lane without stalling. The American eventually finished the session in P16.
As the session progressed more drivers switched to the alternate tyres. With 13 minutes to go VeeKay topped the timesheets setting a 1:09.9265.
Mexican driver O’Ward shaved two tenths off of VeeKay’s effort and went quickest for Arrow McLaren SP.
Palou followed him closely with a 1:09.8137 in a solid day for the Spaniard at Indianapolis who topped first practice.
The top 23 were separated by just one second on the 2.439 mile circuit which should make qualifying a very competitive session.
Juan Pablo Montoya continued his return to IndyCar in the month of May and ended practice in P24 with a 1:11.0173.
Rookie Callum Ilott set 19 laps in the 45 minute session 1:10.4747 and found himself in P19 ahead of the much more experienced Scott Dixon.
