F1 Testing | Lando Norris tops the times on Day 1 of the second test
A late run on the softest tyres put the Brit on top. Both Mercedes and Ferrari suffered from reliability problems during the day.
Morning session
Antonio Giovinazzi banged in the quickest time on the opening morning of test 2. The Italian posted a 1:18.589 using the C4 tyres not long before the lunch break. Pierre Gasly was less than a tenth of a second behind on the harder C3 compound in his Red Bull.
It was a difficult morning for Ferrari as they had to do checks on the cooling system of the SF90. Charles Leclerc was restricted to 29 laps – but he did go 3rd on the C3 tyres, a mere 0.004s slower than Gasly.
Stroll, Magnussen, Russell, Albon, Hamilton, Hulkenberg and Norris completed the standings of the morning session. Norris did cause a red flag in the McLaren thanks to a loss of hydraulic pressure.
Kevin Magnussen completed the most laps with 84, while Lewis Hamilton was one short of that total on 83.
Afternoon session
There were driver swaps at Mercedes, Ferrari and Renault following the lunch break.
The times tumbled in the afternoon as the likely front runners in 2019 started to flex their muscles a bit; before other teams went for quick times on low fuel runs.
Sebastian Vettel initially went fastest. He logged a 1:18.206 on the C3 tyres. However, that benchmark time was usurped by Pierre Gasly as the French driver pumped in a 1:17.715 on the same compound as the German.
Ultimately though, Lando Norris ended the day on top of the pile. The young Brit put in a 1:17.709 on the C5 tyre to be P1. Norris did cause a second red flag on the day after stopping again, this time at turn 2.
Gasly was P2, only 0.006s slower than the McLaren despite being on a tyre that was two steps harder compared to Norris’.
Lance Stroll followed closely behind the Frenchman in 3rd. The young Canadian gradually improved throughout the afternoon. He went 3rd after banging in a 1:18.519 on the C3 compound. A set of C4s were bolted to his car and he lowered his time to a 1:18.215, before another run on the same tyre saw him end up with his best time of the day: a 1:17.824, 0.115s and 0.109s down on Norris and Gasly respectively.
4th place belonged to Sebastian Vettel. The four-time World Champion’s quickest lap was on the C3s like Gasly’s. A 1:17.925 left him a couple of tenths away from the top of the charts. He then focused on long runs following that time early in the afternoon session.
Giovinazzi, Albon, Leclerc, Magnussen, Russell, Ricciardo, Bottas, Hamilton and Hulkenberg filled positions 5-13.
Bottas, who was driving in the afternoon, suffered an oil pressure problem on his first lap out of the pits which meant he did absolutely no until the final 10 minutes.
