Now that the CRB (Contract Recognition Board) has made a decision honoring McLaren’s contract with Oscar Piastri over Alpine’s contract for the 2023 F1 season, the Enstone-based team can now officially pursue Pierre Gasly as a potential teammate to drive alongside Esteban Ocon next season. And Red Bull advisor Helmut Marko has revealed that there have already been talks with Alpine over the possibility of signing Gasly for the 20223 season.

Earlier in the week in Zandvoort Gasly avoided questions directed at his links with the Helmut Marko team, however after Friday’s practice sessions, Marko divulged to Sky Germany that in addition to having discussions with the Alpine, there have been conditions laid out that have not yet been met.

"We have a valid contract for 2023, but in the meantime there are talks.

"If our conditions are met, we wouldn't stand in Gasly's way. It would be a dream come true for him to drive in a French factory team.

"But not all the conditions have been met yet," Marko said.

If Gasly decides to sign with Alpine next season and leave a seat open at Alpha Tauri, Red Bull has some viable options available to them to fill the vacancy including American IndyCar driver Colton Herta. "We've already thought about that, but we don't want to announce that yet," said Marko.

"We have some people in the junior squad who have a superlicence. For the reserve driver, we would recruit someone from that."

Despite Herta’s impressive resume in IndyCar including seven wins, nine poles, and title of youngest driver to win a race in the open-wheel series at 18 years old, the Californian lacks enough points that is needed for a superlicence to enter F1.

Marko, however, recognized Herta’s talents during his F1 testing session with McLaren and left things open ended in regards to the IndyCar driver’s future with AlphaTauri.

"He has already done a Formula 1 test, he was good," said Marko. "I don't want to get into details. Let's wait and see how this develops."

Another possible driver that could  join Alpha Tauri in 2023, Mick Schumacher recently announced that he was leaving the Ferrari driver Academy at the end of the 2022 season. The German’s decision to enter the open driver market as a free agent allows him to pursue opportunities outside of the Scuderia. Marko, admitted that 23-year old was not an option for them and insisted that they focus on drivers from the Red Bull junior program.

"He's not an issue for us. He is - or was - a Ferrari junior. That's why we've never dealt with Mick Schumacher” Marko said.

"We have our own programme. Of course, we prefer our own people."
