Fernando Alonso was the sixth fastest today in Hungary with his 1:18.078 behind teammate Esteban Ocon and ahead of seven-time-world champion Lewis Hamilton who was seventh.
The Spanish Ace who turned 41 yesterday showed a strong pace and made it to Q3 for the sixth consecutive time and 10th time during the season.
He was happy with his Saturday after the team proved to be fast both in wet and dry conditions during Fp3 and Qualifying. Both Alpines in the top six is a great result to the Asturian driver.
“It was a fantastic day. Obviously wet FP3. We were P2 in wet conditions so maybe if it rains tomorrow the car looks fast. Also fast in qualifying and I think both cars in the top six is a fantastic result here in Budapest.”
Alpine is in the middle of a very tight fight with McLaren for the 4th place in the Constructors ‘championship leading the fight 93 to 89 with Norris starting in fourth and Ricciardo in ninth, Fernando predicts a close battle in the Hungaroring but keeps a positive mindset to head into the summer break.
“It´s going to be very tight with McLaren. We are in between both cars and we will try our best to score as many points as possible with both cars and go into the summer break with a good taste after Hungary.”
The starts are key in Hungaroring and although the position is not the most favourable according to Alonso in terms of grip and with Hamilton looming behind, he expects to execute a good strategy.
“Let´s see tomorrow. Unfortunately, we are on the wrong side of the grid. P6. So maybe the grip is a little bit down there. We have to keep an eye on Hamilton 7th but the race is long, we need to execute a good strategy and let´s see at the end.”
