The Azerbaijan Grand Prix has come to an end and it has not been the craziest race we have had throughout the 2022 Formula 1 season. Problems in the power units were a key factor, which played in favour of many teams (like Red Bull and Mercedes) but very badly for others (like Ferrari and Haas). Carlos Sainz had to retire due to a hydraulic problem with his engine, while drivers' title contender, Charles Leclerc also had to retire his F1-75 due to another power unit problem. Likewise, the Ferraris were not the only ones to retire due to this type of problem, but also Zhou's Alfa Romeo, Kevin Magnussen's Haas and Lance Stroll's Aston Martin. This means that of 5 retirements due to problems in the power unit, 4 of them have a Ferrari engine. This was put to good use by Red Bull, who made it 1-2 with championship leader and one-time world champion, Max Verstappen on top of the podium, with Sergio Pérez second. Another team that had a very good performance was Mercedes. The German team stepped on the podium with car number 63 of George Russell, while the seven-time world champion finished the Azerbaijan Grand Prix in fourth place.

The seven-time world champion started the race in seventh position, behind the two Ferraris, the two Red Bulls, his teammate and the AlphaTauri of Pierre Gasly. After the retirement of the Italians, Hamilton climbed to fifth position, where he spent much of the race fighting against the French AlphaTauri driver for fourth position. He eventually got the pass and finished P4. The British driver could be seen quite sore in the back when he got out of his car once he had finished the race. Very probably this is due to the effect of "porpoising" that the current single-seaters have, however, since the Monaco Grand Prix, Hamilton commented that Mercedes is the team that suffers the most from this effect, which is causing the British to feel this physical discomfort. These were some of the statements made by the seven-time world champion after the Azerbaijan Grand Prix.

“I was holding and biting down on my teeth due to the pain, and the adrenaline [helped], I cannot express the pain that you experience, particularly on the straight here. At the end, you are just praying for it to end. But we were in such a good position still, third and fourth, a great result for the team.” The British commented as reported by Sky Sports F1.

“Once we fix this bouncing, we’ll be right there in the race. But we were losing, for sure, over a second just with the bouncing. Or at least a second with bouncing.” He affirmed. “I’ll be at the factory tomorrow; we’ve got to have some good discussions and keep pushing.”

Next week the Canadian Grand Prix will take place in the city of Montreal and at Circuit Gilles-Villeneuve. It is very little time for the German team to solve all their problems with that bouncing that they have been presenting. Usually, the Canadian circuit is one that is favourable to Mercedes, we will see how it goes next weekend and how competitive they will be.
