Checo Perez became the hero of the day after winning a complicated Monaco Grand Prix. The Monaco grand prix is always challenging and today´s wasn´t the exception after a long-delayed start thanks to the rain that fell minutes before the start and a red flag caused by Mick Schumacher´s horrendous crash.

Ferrari couldn´t keep their front row lockout with bad strategy calls and championship contender Charles Leclerc had to see how a home grand prix victory vanished once again. Perez managed his medium tyres and kept Sainz under control to the checkered flag to celebrate for the first time in Monaco.

Checo said to David Coulthard during the post-race interviews, “It´s a dream come true. I mean, as a driver, you dream of winning here. After your home race I think there´s no more special weekend to win. So, to do it and the way we did it, you know, we just made it a bit harder for ourselves there at the end. It was just coming with the graining I had to not make any mistake bring it home but keeping Carlos behind wasn´t easy.”

“It´s a massive day for me and my country," said Checo who became with this victory. Mexico´s most successful F1 driver.  “I´m just very happy. I mean, I was running today Pedro Rodriguez´s helmet and I´m sure up there he´s super proud of what we have achieved together in the sport.”

When he was asked by Sky Sports on his feelings about joining an elite group of Monaco Gp winners he said: “It sounds amazing. As a driver you always dream of winning Monaco to tick that box in my career it´s super special. A very special day.”

Consulted whether it was a risk to put on the mediums, Checo explained, “I think I should have managed them a bit better. I think it was the right call. I still had good traction I think I never felt that risk that much. It was important to keep on track. We probably complicated the race more than we needed. And then towards the end I felt it cleared up a bit the graining and I was able to get some good lap times.”
