McLaren have had a mixed start to the 2022 season, having started strong in Barcelona testing in February before suffering from brake cooling issues in Bahrain which ultimately left the team on the back foot in the opening races.

Asked if he believes the Barcelona circuit will suit the team as it did in February, team principal at McLaren, Andreas Seidl says it should.

“I think the track layout [in Barcelona] definitely suits our package a bit more again.” He said. “We think a lot about what we have seen at the pre-season test, but at the same time, obviously it has been some weeks ago already and everyone has worked on their cars.”

The McLaren man went on to admit the team has a much greater understanding of their own car than last time out in Barcelona in February, as well having upgraded their car since then.

“At the same time we have worked on our car as well. We have a lot better understanding of our car now, our package. Compared to the Barcelona test and compared to Bahrain also.

“It’s still early days for these cars and therefore difficult to predict the pecking order.”

Seidl was also asked whether he believes Barcelona, which is a notoriously difficult track to overtake at, presents a good challenge for the new generation of cars.

The new cars have demonstrated so far this season that they are far more capable of following each other closely, which Seidl believes will improve the show at a track which is often considered boring by fans.

“I think we definitely have seen this year, with the new regulations and with these new cars that they can actually race a lot closer,” he commented. “You don’t kill your tyres that quickly when you race behind each other very close, and it puts you in better positions to be there for overtaking moves.

“It will be interesting how it plays out in Barcelona.
