F1 | Miami GP | Perez "We took certain directions that we had to take and they were probably not ideal"; Ferrari "very strong in the low speed"
Checo Perez disappointed with p.4 but still expecting a good race. "it´s going to be an interesting battle betwee us"
Sergio Perez finished the third free practice ahead of qualifying in a very strong form after setting the fastest lap with a 0.194s gap to the Ferrari of Charles Leclerc.
However, the qualifying session would be another story for Checo and would leave him unhappy and hungry for more with a fourth place behind his teammate Max Verstappen in 3rd and Leclerc and Sainz front row lockout for the Scuderia ahead of tomorrow´s first Miami Grand Prix in Florida.
The Mexican driver looked quite disappointed while talking to the media including MotorLat after the session.
"My first run in Q3 was a disaster. I just had the tyres too cold and that put me off a bit going into my final lap. A couple of hundreds would have put me P2 which was possible, but certainly I think Charles did a very strong lap.”
About today he added: “We took certain directions that we had to take and [they] were probably not ideal."
Sector 2 was a problem for Checo, he later told Sky “the second sector is so sensitive to any slip so just to get it right it felt we didn´t do the right job today getting it right into sector 2 which was the main problem for me.”
When he was asked on what were the problems with getting sector 2 right Checo explained: “it was more on the tool side. It wasn´t properly done.”
About their opponents Checo explained, “I think that they [Ferrari] are very strong in the low speed. They're able to ride the kerb a lot better than we do. They make good lap time on us in the low speed.“
Although he felt disappointed, he keeps a positive mindset for the race “tomorrow is a different story and it's going to be an interesting battle between us.”
