F1 | Gasly Afraid Two Historic Races May Be Omitted From 2023 F1 Calendar
Some of the races closest to home might be removed from the F1 schedule shortly, with Las Vegas, Qatar, and China returning in 2023.
Pierre Gasly has advocated for Spa-Francorchamps and Monaco to continue on the F1 calendar for many years to come, calling them as "historic" tracks.
According to Gasly, they're "part of the history and DNA of Formula 1".
After it was announced that a race will be staged in Las Vegas, the two famous Grand Prix tracks, along with France's Circuit Paul Ricard and Mexico's Autodromo Hermanos Rodriguez, are judged at risk of being dropped from the calendar for 2023.
The current Concorde Agreement, which runs through 2025, allows for a maximum of 24 Grands Prix in a calendar year. Meanwhile, a number of F1 team executives have stated that 23 races is already putting a strain on their resources.
Following Russia's military invasion of Ukraine, the Russian Grand Prix has been removed from F1's future plans – but with Qatar, Las Vegas, and China all slated to return to the calendar in 2023, it seems probable that at least one of the four at-risk courses will be dropped.
Three of these four locations have significant meaning for Gasly.
Gasly said: "[One is] a home race, Monaco kind of feels like a home race, and Spa is the closest race to my hometown, so I usually have a lot of support there."
He continues, "I think they are very iconic tracks; Spa and Monaco are my two favourite tracks. I think they are clearly part of the history and the DNA of Formula 1 and they deserve to be, and should be, on the calendar every year."
He adds, "We know in F1 nowadays, there are a lot of things involved in how they plan the whole season, so we'll see what happens, but, personally, I really hope that we can keep them over the next few years."
It will come as a surprise to fans that Monaco appears to be on the verge of losing its spot, despite the fact that the venue is frequently characterised as a jewel in F1's crown.
