F1 | Australian GP | Stroll happy with P12 chase after ‘frustrating' penalty
Lance Stroll had a great drive chasing for P12 at Albert Park after a penalty.. Despite not scoring points, the Canadian sees positives in his Australian GP.
A bizzare crash in qualifying with Nicholas Latifi saw Lance Stroll hit with a three-place grid drop for Sunday. That was after he crashed in FP3; the Atson Martin mechanics did an incredible job just to give him the opportunity to take to the track in Q1, only for him to collide with his fellow Canadian.
After starting on P19 he was able to make it as high as 9th place, but he wasn’t able to hold back attacks from Gasly and Bottas and eventually finished the Grand Prix on P12.
Despite not earning any points for the Aston Martin team, Stroll finds positives in the weekend at Albert Park. Both of the drivers have currently 0 points in championship standings, and Aston is the only team that did not yet score a single point in constructors championship.
As he said during and interview after the race: "The five-second penalty was frustrating, even though it didn't change our final race position. I caught Valtteri after the Virtual Safety Car and made up a place so it was frustrating to receive a penalty for weaving.”
"I also want to say thank you to the team once again; everybody did a tremendous job to get the cars repaired this weekend. We will keep our heads up and dig deep to try to extract more from the car in the races to come. I think we had the right idea with our strategy by running the majority of the race on the hard tyre, but we will look over the data and see what else we can learn.”
The team has definitely lots of work ahead of them in order to turn their fate in the championship around. Both of the drivers complain about the difficulty or driving the AMR22, and with the struggles with the Mercedes power unit, there is a lot of ground to work on for the team from Silverstone.
