MotorLat had access to an online media session with Toto Wolff where the Team Principal shared his view on the qualifying session results of his team and the upcoming race.
This season is proving to be a difficult one for the constructors world champions and, although, it´s early to make predictions Toto was asked whether he was accepting this championship may not be for them, He accepts the team didn´t have the best start but explained: “I think we´re on the bad foot. If you look at it from a mathematic stand point and probability I´d probably say the odds are two to eight. But this is motor racing anything can happen like a DNF and if we unlock the potential of the car we´re right back in the game... We are third race onto the season. We won´t write the title off but it´s just the current status quo. We are 7 tenths off.”
When he was asked on what have they learned this weekend about the car performance and his thought on being outqualified by one of their customer teams Wolff answered: “I´m satisfied with the result today obviously correct Sainz and Alonso, it´s less good but still solid in the top ten and that was not a given with the closeness of the front end of the midfield. I think, we´re just learning the car. We´re learning the car, the tires, nothing we did this weekend has unlocked the aerodynamic potential or has reduced the bouncing. We´re still at the same place. That´s why it doesn´t make any sense to bring an update. You are confusing yourself even more. Maybe it even the fact that the more downforce you bring the worse the bouncing gets. So, we´re still learning.”
Wolff explained the bouncing Mercedes is suffering, is worse than what the other teams like Ferrari suffer because “it´s worse in the sense we´re carrying it to the corners, the high-speed corners. So, we see where we lose performance. In sector one we´re very competitive, in sector 2 we´re competitive, in sector 3 through nine and ten and to twelve we lose all our margin... almost like a second through a couple of corners. So, will curing the bouncing be the miraculous unlocking of a second within the car? No, for sure not. But there´s many other little improvements we can make on weight and a few others where we can optimize….I´m optimistic that eventually we´re gonna get there whether it is in two races or five or by the end of the season I don´t know but you need to stay humble. My time horizon is not a race weekend or a year it´s more like ten years. I want to look back and have a competitive team and there will be years where it´s more difficult and this is one.”
When he was asked by MotorLat over his expectations for tomorrow and what would be the most realistic goal. Toto explained, “I think our best case would be to end up 5th and 6th. If you look at the pure car pace so obviously people can crash or DNF so can we but if we are able to end 5th and 6th outperform the car to the very closest as in qualifying. I would see this as a very good outcome.”
