After a rough start to the season for McLaren, today's results are a huge confidence booster for the Woking-based squad, with Lando Norris starting 4th tomorrow.
Starting off qualifying in the softs, the Australian driver was able to get into Q2 in P12 with a time of 1:19.665.
Going into Q2, Ricciardo was able to quicken his time in the softs to advance to Q3 with a time of 1:19.130s in P9.
Q3 was when things got a bit interesting for the McLaren driver, completing the qualifying session in the soft, Ricciardo was able to find the pace needed to battle for top 5.
However, he struggled on the last run giving him a time of 1:19.032 in which he was able to qualify P7, just behind the two Mercedes' of George Russell and Lewis Hamilton.
Ricciardo comments, “I think it’s been a positive weekend so far. I've been really happy with the progress and the car has felt good, which I think shows."
He adds, "We had a strong qualifying, so that’s been good, and overall, I’m very pleased."
He continues, "I think the only thing I’m a little bit sour about is the last run. I struggled on that last set of tyres but I’m not really sure why, so we’ll look into that."
He concludes, "Other than that though, it was a really good session. So, we’re in a good spot for tomorrow.”
The home boy did good. 🍯🦡#AusGP 🇦🇺 pic.twitter.com/ZdEBWjIjPL
