Daniel Ricciardo isn’t worried about leaving Red Bull in 2018 despite the Austrian team’s recent Championship success.

Ricciardo enjoyed seven race victories with the Milton Keynes based team including a stunning win at the 2018 Monaco Grand Prix.

But his subsequent moves to Renault and McLaren haven’t yielded the same success despite winning in Italy in 2021.

Speaking to Australian media last week, Red Bull team boss Chirstian Horner said the team had given the Aussie a "stratospheric" offer to remain with the team beyond 2018, which the eight-time Grand Prix winner rejected.

Horner continued: “Daniel could see Max in the ascendancy and he didn’t want to become the second driver.

“His timing was spectacularly bad because obviously, he had doubts about the Honda engine and then [Honda] went on to prove there it was a competitive power unit and a race-winning package.’’

The Australian responded to the Herald Sun today: “Obviously I would love to win a title with McLaren and then kind of say, ‘I told you so’ or whatever, but I appreciate until that happens then there will probably be that narrative with a lot of people."

“That’s ok. It doesn’t bother me. I also knew that it was also going to come with the territory of leaving a big team and obviously at the time I felt like that was the right thing for me.”

Since Ricciardo’s departure in 2018, Red Bull have delivered their first title since 2013 with Max Verstappen winning the Drivers’ Championship in a supremely dramatic finale at last season’s Abu Dhabi Grand Prix.

Red Bull brought Honda onboard as engine supplier for the 2019 campaign, a decision that the 32-year-old says influenced his decision to sign with Renault in 2019.

He said: “And they were going to Honda.

“There were a lot of things that gave me a little bit of discomfort or lack of stability.

“I guess when you break it down, it makes sense, but I totally get why people will say, ‘You shouldn’t have done that’ or whatever.

“That’s expected and I can’t say it bothers me. It is what it is.”

McLaren and Ricciardo have struggled so far in 2022 with the Australian languishing down in P19 in the Drivers’ Standings.

He would be happy with points at his home Grand Prix in Melbourne this weekend: “Looking at Australia, it’s going to be flowing and quite fast again, especially the changes they made.

"So perhaps that comes to us again and maybe we could fight for points. I know that’s not aiming very high but that’s really all we can aim for, for now.“Until we get some big updates, I think anything inside the top 10 we’ll take as a little victory for now.”
