F1 | Saudi Arabian GP | Mattia Binotto: Verstappen and Leclerc battles "very good for F1"
Ferrari’s Team Principal praised the close racing between Leclerc and Verstappen as “what we were looking for” with the new regulations, and believes that the Austrian team have a strong advantage in the World Champion
It's a second consecutive double podium for Ferrari, and a strong performance from both drivers.
Championship leader Charles Leclerc had to surrender the win to Max Verstappen in the final laps of the race, missing out on an opportunity to gain again the lead of the race due to yellow flags, while Carlos Sainz after worrying about some fuel issues ahead of the race, managed to conserve his starting P3.
Team Principal Mattia Binotto is stoked by the level of racing showcased today at Jeddah, and extremely pleased by his drivers'performance as he told Sky Sports:
"Honestly, as first congrats to Red Bull and Max, he did a fantastic race, he drove very well. It has been a very spectacular race to see these two guys battling for the first positions."
Such a close fight at the top of the grid is definitely a good spot for the new regulations:
"It has been not a good, but a great race, and I think that's what we were looking for, and for us to be competitive to fight, it was at least our objective to start the season, and we can be very pleased, I think in two races out of 88 total available we scored 78. I think it's happened because it can only be a good start for the season."
Driver of the Day was Charles Leclerc, who led the majority of the 50 laps completed today at Jeddah.
"I think he drove very well and he's very smart. These two guys are very strong, have got a lot of talent, and he's proved it again today that he can fight with Max at his level, they were fighting when they were kids and now they are fighting here for first position in F1. Again, it's very, very good for F1 and a fantastic start of the season."
Heading to a freshly renovated Melbourne, the only certainty Binotto has is that there will be, once again, tight racing and, due to the DRS as well, not only for the top positions:
"Red Bull has got a lot of speed in the straights, that's their choice. We are a bit faster here, have been compromising in the corners. Different tracks, different circuits, I'm quite curious to see the next one. I'm curious to see Melbourne with the new layout and curious to see Imola."
"But overall, I'm pretty sure it will be a great battle for at least the start of the season and let's see how that will then develop throughout the season itself."
In spite of leading both championships after the first races, the Ferrari TP still believes Red Bull to be the favourites in the title fight, even if at the moment anything can happen, especially during a single race:
"I believe that Red Bull are very fast, they are the strongest because they are the world champion, I would say that they are still the favorite and we try to do our best. Let's see, there are a lot of, let's say, situations that may happen throughout a race, as you have seen today a VSC can influence how the race has been in the final part of the race itself, but I think it's great and that what is important is to be competitive."
