F1 | Saudi Arabian GP | Checo says his pole lap was "his best lap" of his F1 career
Saudi Arabian polesitter, Sergio Perez, has admitted that his pole lap was probably his best lap that he has ever done in all his Formula 1 career.
With the qualifying session now over, we can say that the Mexican driver, Sergio "Checo" Perez, has obtained pole position for the first time in his career in Formula 1. After a qualifying with two red flags caused by an accident with the Williams of Nicholas Latifi and a serious incident with the Haas of the German driver, Mick Schumacher, Sergio Perez managed to beat his teammate, Max Verstappen, who finished the session in P4 , as well as beating the two Ferrari drivers who were the most promising to take pole position. On the one hand, Charles Leclerc was positioned in first place in the three free practice sessions, while Carlos Sainz was first during Q1 and Q2; but the Italian team failed to get the desired result from the session held on the Jeddah street circuit in Saudi Arabia. It was a lap time of 1:28.200 that gave the Mexican driver his first pole position, with a difference of 0.025 seconds over Charles Leclerc, the Monegasque driver will have to settle for starting the Saudi Arabian Grand Prix in the second position. These were some of the words that the Mexican driver commented after his exceptional performance.
“It took me a couple of races but what a lap, man, it was unbelievable. I can do 1000 laps and I don’t think I can beat that lap. It was unbelievable. We were not really expecting too much with the Ferraris in qualifying. We were focusing mainly on the race hopefully we’ll get them tomorrow.” He stated as his first pole position arrived after 215 attempts.
“It’s been a tough weekend in Bahrain, where we were so disappointed to miss both cars. But the team didn’t put their heads down. We kept pushing. We felt we were not as strong as we feel we’re going to be in the race.”
“So, it’s already a very good sign to be on pole.”
“We’ve been focusing more on race pace than qualy. We feel that we’ve given away some qualy performance to gain in the race. But obviously, I expect these two [Ferraris] are going to be very strong. I really hope that we can have a strong race tomorrow.”
As we can hear, it is really nice to see Checo on pole for the first time in his Formula One career. It was, is and will be an intense battle between both Red Bulls and both Ferraris, as for the second race in a row, these two teams are on the first two rows of the starting grid. Last weekend’s Bahrain Grand Prix polesitter was Charles Leclerc with Max Verstappen alongside him, as his teammate was in P3 with the Mexican driver in P4. An exciting race is ahead of us and we will know who came on top when the chequered flag goes down in Jeddah.
