F1 | Lewis Hamilton confirms name change, set to add mother's surname to his
Lewis Hamilton is in the process of adding his mother's surname to his own name.
Lewis Hamilton has revealed at the Dubai Expo event that he’s heading for a name change in 2022.
Asked what it would mean to become the first eight-time World Champion in the history of F1, Hamilton admitted it would be mind-blowing.
“It’s impossible to know what the future holds and what it would feel like but doing something no one else has done would feel mind-blowing,” he said.
“I know it would mean so much to all of us that go through all these different emotions through the year.
“Those of you that are on the road with me; whether you’re at home or at the race track. You’re there with me in the car and I’m carrying you with me.”
He then spoke about how much it would mean to his family and talked about adding his mother’s surname on to his own name.
Carmen Larbalestier split with Hamilton's father Anthony at an early age.
The 37-year-old believes that a women shouldn't lose their surname when they get married.
“It would mean the world to my family,” Hamilton continued.
“I’m really proud of my family’s name, Hamilton. None of you might know that my mum’s name is Larbalestier, and I’m just about to put that in my name.
“Because I don’t really fully understand the whole idea of when people get married that the woman loses her name.
“My mum, I really want her name to continue on with the Hamilton name.”
Hamilton was also asked about the season-opening Bahrain Grand Prix which takes place in just six days from now.
While believing he works with the best team, he is keeping a very watchful eye on Red Bull and Ferrari in particular.
“I’m really hoping that when I get off this call this evening, they’ve found some tricks, found some ways to extract more out of this car,” Hamilton said.
“There’s a lot of cars that are looking quite fast. Alfa Romeo were looking fast, Valtteri [Bottas] was looking quick.
“Obviously the Red Bull looks ridiculously fast at the moment, and the Ferraris.
“But we are the best team, undoubtedly," he concluded.
