F1 | The 2022 Russian Grand Prix has been cancelled
Following the news of Russia's invasion of the Ukraine, F1 has swiftly cancelled the Russian Grand Prix this year.
The 2022 Russian Grand Prix has been axed following a meeting between Formula 1, the FIA and teams last night.
It comes after Vladimir Putin ordered Russian troops to invade their neighbours the Ukraine during the early hours of Thursday morning.
The final race at Sochi was due to take place on the 25th of September. Turkey has been widely tipped to take that now vacant slot on this year's calendar.
F1 is due to move to a new venue in Russia next year at Igora Drive, north of Saint Petersburg.
The decision to cancel the race follows a call by UEFA to move the Champions League Final in May from Saint Petersburg to Paris.
"The FIA Formula 1 World Championship visits countries all over the world with a positive vision to unite people, bringing nations together," said F1 in a statement.
"We are watching the developments in Ukraine with sadness and shock and hope for a swift and peaceful resolution to the present situation.
"On Thursday evening Formula 1, the FIA, and the teams discussed the position of our sport, and the conclusion is, including the view of all relevant stakeholders, that it is impossible to hold the Russian Grand Prix in the current circumstances."
Haas's Russian driver Nikita Mazepin, whose F1 future could be impacted by the invasion, took to Twitter and wrote: "To my fans and followers - it's a difficult time and I am not in control over a lot of what is being said and done. I'm choosing to focus on what I CAN control by working hard and doing my best for my Haas F1 Team. My deepest thanks for your understanding and support."
McLaren also reacted to the news and said: "McLaren Racing is in full support of F1 and the FIA’s decision to remove the 2022 Russian Grand Prix from the 2022 race calendar."
