F1 | Binotto: " They will be free to fight."
Scuderia Ferrari team principal told Sky F1 commentator Martin Brundle that Ferrari has pushed the new regulations to the limit to design the F1-75 and he has no worry about managing his talented drivers.
Last week saw Scuderia Ferrari unveil their 2022 challenger – the F1-75. During the televised launch, Scuderia Ferrari team principal Mattia Binotto described his team’s new car as a ‘brave Ferrari’. He expanded this point later with Sky F1 commentator Martin Brundle as he explained how he feels that Ferrari has pushed the new regulations to the limit in their desire to be challenging at the front once more.
The 2021 F1 season saw Scuderia Ferrari edge out McLaren in an intense battle for P3 of the F1 Constructor’s Championship. With Red Bull Racing and Mercedes-AMG Petronas Formula One Team seemingly in a league of their own, the season long battle for ‘best of the rest’ captivated F1’s global audience.
However, Scuderia Ferrari are not a team that are going to be content with P3 as they endeavour to battle back to the front of the grid once again. As such, it will take something special to get ahead of the charging bulls and silver arrows. Therefore, it is little wonder that with the new regulations for the 2022 F1 season, the team have pushed things as much as they can in the hope of bringing glory back to the Tifosi once more.
Talking to Sky Sports F1, team principal Mattia Binotto elaborated further on Ferrari's entry for the 2022 F1 season in discussion with Sky F1 commentator Martin Brundle. Binotto had already demonstrated his pride at the unveiling of the F1-75 and said that the team has put their heart and soul into this year’s grid entry.
In the televised unveiling, the F1-75 was labelled as a brave Ferrari. This comes from the fact that so much is unknown about what the car will produce on track and it is for this reason that Binotto cannot wait to get to Barcelona to start testing. Only then will the team ascertain whether the correlation is right. If the F1-75 can perform in free air on track as it has done in the wind tunnel – then it could be a promising year for Ferrari.
"I am very excited because of the new regulations, the new challenge and the new car that I love. It's a brave car, given the way we've interpreted the new rules. I'm very curious to see how it works.” Binotto told Sky F1.
Before this, Mattia Binotto had been speaking at the F1-75 launch to the wider Tifosi looking on as he made clear that he realises better is expected from his team.
“We know that expectations are high and, that in recent years, the results have not lived up to what is expected of the Ferrari name. “
Binotto also referred to past mistakes.
“We went in a new direction back in 2019 and, even if there have been some difficult moments along the way, it has delivered a stronger and more unified team – and this car is the perfect expression of all our effect. Now it’s time to go up against the opposition.”
In Binotto’s closing remarks during the Sky F1 segment, he made clear exactly how he feels.
“I am excited. Brand new regulations and a brand-new challenge.”
There are many millions of Ferrari fans no doubt equally excited for the year ahead. Maybe, Ferrari really are back to being F1 Championship contenders. Consequently, with two closely matched drivers in the form of Carlos Sainz and Charles Leclerc, how will Binotto manage this talented pair for the good of the team?
“First, I like the fact they’ve got a lot of ambitions. The level is very high and they are both very fast…it’s down to them to manage the competition between them. They are both very mature drivers, it’s important when they fighting and passing between them that they they will take no risks. Then it’s a matter of fairness between them too. They will be free to fight, certainly, that’s important because they are two champions.” Binotto explained.
Time will tell as to how long that mindset lasts. If Ferrari does make their way back to the front it may mean that the only person left for Carlos Sainz or Charles Leclerc to pass – would be each other. That is a conversation for another day though, for now it seems Ferrari believe they could be title challengers once more – that is certainly reason for excitement.
