F1 | George Russell introduced his new helmet design"A red helmet in a Mercedes is very Michael Schumacher and I wanted to respect that."
George Russell changed his helmet design to respect Michael Schumacher.
Helmets are the personal statements of the drivers whether it is to pay tribute to someone or something close to their hearts or to celebrate a milestone in their careers. Back in his Red Bull days Sebastian Vettel went the extra mile and would change it more often than anyone. A new season is a good moment for F1 drivers to update their Helmet designs even more if it is the first one with a record breaking team like Mercedes.
One the day of his 24th birthday, British driver George Russell introduced yesterday his helmet to make his debut with Mercedes. “Quite different in colours compared to what I have had previously.”
The driver explained in a video posted yesterday on Mercedes twitter account that “the reason for that is because I wanted to bring forward a bold colour. I´ve mainly had red on my helmet previously.” However, the decision for the change is not just based on a change of livery to mark a new beginning in his career.

Russell´s previous helmet design looked very similar to Michael Schumacher´s helmet design from his Mercedes years. The German drove for the Brackley-based team from 2010 to 2012 when he retired from the sport for the last time. Seen on pictures or TV both helmets look very similar.
Russell explained “A red helmet in a Mercedes I thought it was very Michael Schumacher and I wanted to respect that and go in a different direction.”
The mostly black helmet is combined with red blue and white details that highlight Russell´s logo on the sides and the famous Mercedes star on the top front.
