Williams team principal and CEO Jost Capito has openly admitted that the rate of development of the team's new car is far more important than initial speed.

As the sport gears up for a radically different era that will drastically change the way that the cars look and feel as well as how much they'll cost to run throughout a season, Williams are hoping to maintain their form from last year that saw him move up to eighth in the constructors' championship after three years routed at the bottom of the table.

The icing on the team's cake came in Spa as George Russell secured the team's first podium for four years with a second-place finish at last year's rain-swept Belgium Grand Prix.

Although the Dorilton Capital owned team has yet to release the launch date for their new 2022 machine that will be driven by Nicholas Latifi and the returning Alex Albon, Capito has openly said that the team must prioritize the rate of development of the new car over instant speed.

"Sure, that is an opportunity with the new regulations, but it's very unknown; every team did its own objectives, what they want out of the car. For me, what counts more is the development speed, and the progress you make through next season instead of where you kick-off, and what we look like to develop a car that we understand, it's not too complicated and a car that has lots of potential to develop in various directions."

Capito explained that he would prefer more development of the 2022 car rather than the initial on-track pace, and that is because he feels that it will be more beneficial to the team, in the long run, to continue developing throughout the season.

"Then, I think it's pure speculation where you kick-off, but from then, the team has to be in the position to catch up the development and be fast in moving the car forward. I think that it's more important than the initial' how the car is coming off the blocks."
