F1 | 2021 teammate comparisons; Pierre Gasly vs Yuki Tsunoda
We analyze Pierre Gasly's and Yuki Tsunoda's 2021 seasons and compare both of the Alpha Tauri drivers.
The 2021 Alpha Tauri season represented the first step of a long-term project with the combination of an experienced Pierre Gasly and the Japanese rookie, Yuki Tsunoda. The team has found in these two drivers the right formula for what could be a great team for the middle-field. The French Alpha Tauri driver gave a lot to talk about this year, and it is that the level shown gave him the opportunity to be asked to return to the Red Bull principal team; this was added to some statements that he launched against Sergio Perez, however the latest results set the pattern for his future to be in the blue and white team as head of the project. On the other hand, Tsunoda, showed an important recovery from the poor results at the beginning of the season, even managing to obtain his best result of the season at the Abu Dhabi Grand Prix by finishing in fourth position, one ahead of his teammate. Alpha Tauri as a team managed to climb a step in the Constructors' World Championship by finishing in sixth place, thanks to the work of this duo, and was above the new Aston Martin team.
Qualifying session
Pierre Gasly's dominance over Yuki Tsunoda was overwhelming this season, of the 22 qualifying session that took place this year, it was only one in which the Japanese driver managed to be above his teammate. The perseverance of the Frenchman is noteworthy this season, which made him the seventh best driver during this session. The experience was one of the big differences between the two drivers, since despite having the same car, Tsunoda only managed to qualify in Q3 seven times, while Gasly was only knocked out of Q3 four times. In terms of lap times, the differences are also abysmal, since the former Red Bull driver managed to be ahead throughout the season by an average of -3.274, not counting the absences in qualifying by Yuki at the Imola Grand Prix and in France.

Race
In the Sunday races, the team's winner was also Frenchman Pierre Gasly, and although perseverance was not the best thing Yuki Tsunoda had, we were able to see some flashes of quality like in Abu Dhabi and Hungary, and only in three races, he was able to overtake his teammate, one of those being in Styria where the Frenchman had a DNF. Despite leading the team, Gasly fell a little short on the track to give strength to his arguments of wanting to return to Red Bull, which although he showed that he has left his time with the energy drink team behind, his performance compared Sergio Perez's “his direct competition” for the seat, was far behind.
This season set the tone for Gasly to be the head of the Alpha Tauri team; however, it seems that he does not like the idea too much. On the other hand, Yuki Tsunoda had a great rookie season but not astonishing as he managed to enter six times in points position.
