Now that the F1 season is over and testing for the new 18 in Pirelli tyres has been completed in Abu Dhabi, the off-season has officially begun and it’s off to a rough start for Charles Leclerc who recently tested positive COVID-19. After finishing the season with a 10th place finish at the Abu Dhabi GP and 7th in the drivers' standings two places behind teammate Carlos Sainz, the Ferrari driver was hoping to jump-start his 2022 season and work a few days at the Maranello headquarters before the year ended.

On December 14, two days before Ferrari released a statement verifying that Leclerc has tested positive for COVID-19, the 24-year old driver expressed his excitement looking forward to his last work commitments of the year on Twitter:

“Last laps of 2021 done! Now off to Maranello for a few days to keep working on 2022, then time to recharge for the new year.”

This is also the second time that Leclerc has tested positive for COVID-19. The previous occurrence for the Ferrari driver was back in January of this year. His most recent positive COVID-19 result comes after his trip back home after the Abu Dhabi testing. Ferrari also released an official statement on Twitter which included an update on Leclerc’s health.

“Scuderia Ferrari Mission Winnow driver (Charles Leclerc) has tested positive for COVID-19. In accordance with protocols required by FIA and the team, Charles was tested on his return from Abu Dhabi. He is currently feeling fine, with mild symptoms, and will self-isolate at home.”
