F1 | Abu Dhabi GP | “The last ten laps I thought it was over for us” said Horner after Verstappen’s coronation
Christian Horner was absolutely delighted during his post-race interview, going thotough the emotions he and the team endured during Abu Dhabi crazy season finale.
“What an unbelievable end of the season,” said the Sky Sports commentator as Red Bull Team Principal was approaching him for the post-race interview.
“Well, I think this finale perfectly sums up how crazy this year was” commented Horner.
“Thank you to Nicholas Latifi for the safety car, and I have to say with the stewards, we felt hard done by earlier in the race, they did well to get the race going again. It’s been an insane competition but for Max to win the championship it’s been about the whole year, not just here,” he continued.
Horner also gave credit to Hamilton stating that “Lewis he has been an incredible opponent and World Champion so this makes it [Max’s win] even more valid”.
The race ended in a controversial manner, with race director Michael Masi making questionable decisions, which, according to many, have biased the finale.
Race director Michael Masi initially said lapped cars wouldn't be able to overtake but changed his mind and allowed the cars in between Hamilton and Verstappen to overtake. This allowed the last lap sprint to decide the World Championship. Toto Wolff was furious and complained to Masi over the radio.
"Of course, Toto Wolff will do that. It's unheard of to leave the cars unlapped. They wanted to get the race going again, they don't have to catch up to the back of the pack,” commented Horner, “the entire season was about letting them race so they made the right call”

“I've lost my voice; I was screaming from turn five. You just knew Max wasn't going to give it up. To close it out and see him become world champion after all these years, it's an amazing season," Horner concluded.
Going down the memory lane, Horner was asked how this victory compares to Sebastian Vettel’s first World Championship.
“Oh I think we cannot compare them, because of the quality of the opponents we had this year, they pushed us so hard,” “you know the last ten laps I was thinking what am I going to say to Max, what am I going to say to the guys to pick them up ad then the safety car happen and we got the win.
“But it’s not just about this race, it’s about the whole year: this probably makes it the best championship we have ever won” he concluded.
🗣 "This Championship came down to the last lap and it was a great strategy call by the Team to make that pit stop onto the set of softs and then it was down to Max to make it happen." Christian on the #AbuDhabiGP 👑 pic.twitter.com/vrzQHitDSa
