F1 | US GP | Sergio Perez one lap away from his first pole position: “I was close in the final lap of the session, but I’m happy for the team”
The Mexican managed to find the perfect lap in Q3, but a brilliant final lap by his team mate Max Verstappen, took his chance to start from the pole position away
An intense qualifying session for Sergio Perez this afternoon in Austin. After the terrible sensation after not respecting track limits in Q2 on his first medium run, he was very close to achieve what it could have been the first pole position of his career, on a track historically known as a Mercedes one in the turbo-hybrid era.
As Perez himself commented in the post-qualifying press conference: “I thought this could have been my day, I worked very hard, but I still think we are in a good position for tomorrow. I’m not very concerned with qualifying now. It’s going to be a very long race and I think we’ll have our chances to do some good work”
Overall the Red bull driver is quite happy with his result, explain that “This was the best we could achieve today” and he added -“I worked very hard since the beginning of this weekend with my engineers, behind the scenes, trying to get the car at its best shape; we can see the progresses we’ve made and I expect it keeps getting better.”
Perez looked very determinated to do a great job tomorrow and try to improve his qualify result: “I’ll try to maximise every single opportunity tomorrow and hopefully we’ll make a 1-2 for the team.”
On his last lap he commented “A bit of rain was starting to come down in the pit lane, so the uncertain weather and maybe a little lack of confidence made me lose quite a bit of time and I couldn’t improve my lap time”
SERGIO: “Yeah, well we were really close on that final lap, I think we did a great job as a team.

Tomorrow it’s a very long race, I think qualifying position is not too relevant, there will be a lot of degradation on these tyres. Just looking forward to it!#USGP 🇺🇸 #F1 pic.twitter.com/BF8xDb8iWv
