Sergio Perez first season with Red Bull has been full of ups and downs so far: a few finishes in the points, two outside of the top ten, a win in Baku, a podium at Paul Ricard and a DNF after getting caught up in the first lap mess of the Hungarian GP just before the summer break.

Helmut Marko certainly didn’t miss out on calling the Mexican out for his fluctuating performance and, as every driver who has set foot at Red Bull Racing knows too well, he is quite straightforward to say the least. Perez, however, doesn’t seem to mind his ways.

Here is what the driver had to say when in a interview with  Motorsport.com he was asked whether Marko has ever been excessively tough with him: "When he had to be. When I have a bad race, he will just tell me, and he will always tell you exactly what he thinks.”

"It is something good I think for someone with my experience, with my career in Formula 1, with the career I've had. It's good to have someone that tells you straight away what he's thinking, and where you are."

An approach he feels is shared by the whole management.

"With Red Bull, there's no holding back. So they are quite transparent with myself and with the media, which is good.”

But what is crucial for Checo is that he feels satisfied with his performances himself.

"But the most important thing is that I'm happy and I'm satisfied going home, weekend after weekend. That for me is the most important thing, you know. I'm a very hungry driver and I have to live with myself."

And what about his relationship with his teammate Max Verstappen?

"I have a good relationship with him on track and off track, so we are able to share our views regularly," he said.

The two, however, have very different driving styles which makes it difficult to exchange advices with the Dutchman.

"Obviously my issues that I speak about, he probably doesn't find the same thing, so we drive differently. It's hard in that regard, but we are pushing the team forward together, so that is good."
