F1 | Binotto: “We’ve got the best line-up of the entire pit lane.”
Ferrari Team Principal, Mattia Binotto, talked about how he feels with their line-up and the performance both drivers are showing.
After one of the worst seasons ever in 2020 from Ferrari, the Italian team has shown a stronger performance for 2021, fighting against McLaren for the third place in the Constructors' Championship and currently both teams tied with 163 points. In 2020 Ferrari finished its season with only 131 points and P6 in the Teams' Championship.
Mattia Binotto said:
“I’m very happy for many reasons."
"The first is that I think we’ve got the best line-up of the entire pit lane.”
“The second, because we know Charles is fantastic driver, very talented, but he still continues improving and I’m pretty happy with that, he’s got great opportunities for a win, the first was in Monaco but for reasons we know it didn’t happen.”
Leclerc and Sainz have had a solid first half of season and the team has been so close to win in different situations but that first place in the podium still hasn't arrived, pole at Monaco and Azerbaijan and leading at Silverstone with 3 laps remaining.
“And then the other side.”
“I think that Carlos is integrating very well. He’s improving race by race, he’s somehow a great, let me say, benchmark for Charles as well, pushing him as well when conditions are more difficult, and I think that as you said 80 points each, it shows how important it is somehow to have two good drivers scoring points for the constructor, I’m very happy with that.”
“And looking forward, I think those two guys will give us great satisfaction.”
Sainz has been a very strong driver this season, adapting fast to the team and car and giving Ferrari the first podium of the season (P2 at Monaco) and being promoted to P3 after the disqualification of Vettel at the Hungarian GP.
During this last race, Sainz questioned the strategy of the team, Binotto said he was happy with this communication:
"These are conclusions that we are reaching together, so it's our way of approaching, having an open discussion on the radio, making sure that in certain conditions we are reaching the right conclusion."
"I think we had always good strategies, which have been applied not only thanks to the strategist but thanks to the contribution of the drivers, who are the ones driving the car, and knowing the conditions around the track.”
"So I don't think it's a misjudgment, because the final call has been done by the strategist. The driver has suggested what was his impression being there, we review our simulation, or our evaluations, we concluded that was the right choice.”
Carlos Sainz said:
"I was just very keen on transmitting to them by doing an extra lap that I was, I was going to be very quick. By taking that extra lap, I think we did the right call. The team agreed with me, and, in the end, we did I think the right call."
"We overcut the two guys by doing very good pace, so [I'm] happy that we keep learning together.”
