Mick Schumacher shared his thoughts and feelings on the first sprint race in F1 history.
Mick Schumacher shared his thoughts and feelings on the first sprint race ever in F1, the incident with his teammate and what comes ahead. The German will start from the 18th position ahead of his teammate Nikita Mazepin and Red Bull´s Sergio Perez.
When he was asked by MotorLat about his thoughts on the sprint race and whether he thinks it will make the competition more interesting the German rookie said, “I think it´s interesting. It´s different to whatever we had before. I think that if it makes things more interesting, maybe. I think it´s nice for the fans they get to see racing on Saturday and on Sunday. But, to be fair, I think that obviously I wouldn´t foresee F1 doing this each event. I think it´s going to be like a special event type thing, three or four races in the year. I don´t see them doing every event. So, I think at times it´s cool maybe, otherwise probably, I would prefer having the normal schedule but, again, some race can be made special in that way”
About the incident with his teammate Nikita Mazepin, Schumacher explained “I think it starts off with us starting very close to each other. “Obviously I think it´s unfortunate because we both carried damage from it which, I think doesn´t improve the position we are in unfortunately. But again I think it´s hard to say there´s a clear way or approach …obviously we are racing, we are very close by and eventually these things will happen but again I think it didn´t really affect our position in terms of race time tomorrow. Unfortunately, we don´t have the pace so until that we were a bit more off. Hopefully tomorrow we will be closer with a car that is in one piece.” About the damages, Schumacher added, “the right hand side of the floor which was broken in two different places which obviously does cost us a bit but I doubt it´ll cost us to the point that we will be able to follow Williams tomorrow but who knows maybe tomorrow things look different”
When he was asked to compare the sprint race in F2 with the new F1 sprint race “it feels a lot shorter in F1 than what we had usually in the main race so I think that´s definitely one point but again I think the concept is interesting but I guess it´s because these cars at the moment are very hard to follow. That hopefully should improve the situation next year and make things more interesting and the car will be able to follow closer and the battling will be more in one pack than separated in different packs.”
