F1 | French GP | Andreas Seidl on Pirelli and teams' statements after Baku tyre failures: "Disappointing for us that there is not more transparency"
"What is a bit disappointing for us is that there is not more transparency in what actually happened, because it was a safety-critical topic." Said McLaren’s Team Principal in a virtual media event with selected media that included MotorLat.
French GP arrived and with that, the polemic involving the Baku tyres incidents does not take a break. After Pirelli released an official statement declaring it was no debris, neither quality issues that caused the left rear blowouts from both Red Bull’s and Aston Martin's cars, and then the teams countercharge strongly saying every usual Pirelli’ protocol was perfectly followed during the Azerbaijan GP.

With this, yesterday at the media day and conference from drivers Max Verstappen went off on the criticism for Pirelli and its controversial conclusions, saying: “the only thing I can say is from our side the team did everything like they should have done. They followed all the guidelines with tyre pressures and stuff so it was nothing to be to be found there. So, I don’t really get it."
Now, Andreas Seidl has spoken about the topic and, contrary to the Dutch driver, the McLaren Team Principal defends he thinks something must have been going on inside Red Bull and Aston Martin for such tyre failures and says the compounds the company has supplied the teams with have shown to be safe.
"First of all, it was a very interesting sequence of events this week with the TD coming out and seeing the carefully chosen words in the press releases from all parties involved. What is a bit disappointing for us is that there is not more transparency in what actually happened because it was a safety-critical topic, what happened in Baku.”
"Normally, in the past, with cases like that there is transparency of what is happening, which didn't happen so far,” Andreas Seidl said in a virtual media event that included MotorLat.
"I think Pirelli has produced a safe product for this year. If we look at our car for example in Baku, if you were running the car within the regulations and following the prescriptions from Pirelli, there was no issue with the tyre.”
Same as Red Bull and Aston Martin declared earlier in the week, the German has stated that McLaren will follow the new prescriptions and tire measurements agreed by Pirelli and the FIA to make sure such incidents as the ones that took place in Baku’s long straight will not happen again.
"In the end, it involves both parties who were involved in what happened there."
"So that's why I think it would be important for everyone, for the entire paddock to have transparency in understanding what actually happened, and what was causing these failures in the end. From our point of view, they were not really needed - the regulations were clear before. There is a clear reason why we get the prescriptions from Pirelli, and why these regulations are in place."
"We as a team are fully aware of that, and we know we have to act responsibly with these prescriptions within the regulations in order to make sure that there are not tyre failures and we do not put our drivers at risk. The TD doesn't change anything in terms of what we did, what we have to do now or what we did in the past. As I said before, the regulations were clear before."
"That's why I feel it would be important for the entire paddock to have transparency in understanding what actually happened and what was causing these failures in the end," Seidl concluded.
