F1 | Franz Tost: "Gasly belongs, for me, to the absolutely top drivers"

Franz Tost, current team principal of the Scuderia AlphaTauri team, addressed some very important words to Pierre Gasly. He said that the Frenchman is a top driver because: "he gets everything out of the car, doesn't make mistakes, and brings home points.”

After yet another success, with his AlphaTauri, that this year seems particularly suited to fast circuits, Gasly is proving to be a strong and complete driver.

The Frenchman, in Baku, traveled carefully curve after curve, lap after lap, until he found the right opportunity, which came when the Grand Prix was only two laps to go, managing to take a very important third place for the team from Faenza.

"The third place was very important for him and for his self-confidence,” Franz Tost told Autosport.

"From FP1 until the race, the speed was always there. Pierre was always within the first five or six."

“He had to take care of the tyres, the brakes, the fuel consumption. And we were always safe side, and we wanted to have some reserves for the end of the race," he added.

“I must say, we were lucky we were not involved in any incidents. Pierre handled the starts and the first laps really very professionally, because the fight with [Charles] Leclerc was quite tough. And he could bring home this third position.”

Baku was not the only Grand Prix in which Gasly was able to demonstrate his talent, even to the less attentive eyes: the first podium in the 2019 Brazilian GP, the victory at the Monza in 2020, at the beginning of which Gasly even started tenth, are perfect examples.

“Pierre always did a good job, but we could not provide him with a really good car in Portimao, and also a little bit in Barcelona. But in Monaco we came back, and Baku as well," Tost stated.

“He is there, and he belongs for me to the absolutely top drivers," - he continued - "Because he gets everything out of the car, doesn't make mistakes, and brings home points.”
Gasly is only 25 years old, yet this can already be considered the second part of her career, much brighter and happier than the first one.

"I hope that he stays with us,” - said Tost - “We'll see now with the cost cap if we can provide him with a competitive, proper car."

“And then there's no reason than to change. And it's anyway a decision from Red Bull, who is driving.”

Alpha Tauri relies heavily on a driver who, even if young, now has the experience of a veteran, like Gasly:

"That's important [having an experenced driver]. Especially next year, with the new regulations. We need a benchmark, we need to know where to go from the set-up of the car. That's not possible with two young drivers, or two inexperienced drivers."
