F1 | George Russell: "I have had a relatively easy trip being off the radar"
In an interview with racefans.net, George Russell has shared his thoughts about his collition with Valtteri Bottas during the Emilia Romagna GP, how driving for a top team affects you psycollogically, his future, etc.
George Russell was one of the protagonists of the Emilia Romagna Grand Prix and not exactly on the positive way. As a result of his incident with Valtteri Bottas, both had to retire from the race and although race control determined it as a race incident and neither of them was not penalized, there were several controversial statements by Russell, Valtteri and even Toto Wolff.
Russell considers that he is at the perfect point to start a new stage, "I think I am at a level where I am capable of winning races," he commented in an interview for racefans.net and affirms that he still has skills to develop: "I do not believe I am at my highest potential, and I think I have a long way to go. There is a lot that I have to improve and a lot that I can bring to the table”.
After having replaced Lewis Hamilton during the 2020 Sakhir Grand Prix, George admitted competing in a much more competitive team can make you feel psychologically more stressed, since you are on a car that is capable of winning not only races, but championships: "The joys of success are even greater and the casualties in disappointment are even greater, much deeper."
The British driver, comments that in Williams everything is more relaxed and with less pressure (and of course, with less results), “I have had a relatively easy trip being off the radar the last two and a half years. Never in the points, doing my job "and on many occasions he races without attracting attention, "If I'm a little out of rhythm, it can go a little unnoticed. If I have a good result, again, it may not show too much. You come out of most weekends relatively satisfied, even though you knew maybe you could have had half a tenth more." But these same details have a different meaning being at the other end of the grid, “The [Sakhir] Grand Prix, for example, half a tenth, would have meant a pole position for me and my feeling on Saturday afternoon, it would have been completely different from what it was. That's what sport and Formula 1 are all about”, recalling that that pole was left by Bottas with a minimal difference (0.026 sec).
"What I have learned the most is that things will not get easier psychologically if I fight up in front, in that case, it will get more difficult."
After the Bottas-Russell incident, Russell acknowledged his mistake on social media, offering an apology for the situation and confirmed the sincerity in his message, “Everything I put in is authentic” and added: “Obviously I have someone helping me manage my accounts, but all the messages, all the photos, are signed by me or created and signed by me ”.
"At the end of the day, there are only 20 drivers in this ruthless sport."
Formula 1 is a cycle and while there are young drivers, another sector of the grid will also retire in the coming years, giving way to new rivalries. On this, Russell commented that Verstappen. “He's on another level”, thanks to his experience in recent years and his time with the same team and he thinks that together with Leclerc, they will be among the top drivers for the next 10 years, “So I look forward to that challenge of fighting against them. in different cars or fighting with one of the two as a teammate”.
Rumours have pointed to a duo with Max in Mercedes, although he claims that for the moment to “He hasn't thought about that”, but he does have an expectation for the future with the team: “Mercedes has always put its faith in me and everything that is ongoing. They signed me in 2016 and put me in GP3 and the goal was to win. So I was in F2, the goal was to win and be in Formula 1”.
