For the first time in the V6 era, pole position, in Bahrain, wasn't taken by a Ferrari or a Mercedes.

Red Bull, with its flaming Honda engine, managed to set an amazing lap (1:28.997) with Verstappen taking the first place in the front row.

On the other hand Sergio Perez, new entry in the Austrian family, had a difficult start, he made a mistake during his first lap in Q2 with medium tyres, his time was cancelled for a breach of track limits at turn four, and he didn't manage to qualify for Q3 with the yellow marked tyres despite his best efforts, remaining behind Lance Stroll.

During an interview with selected media he explained Red Bull's difficult weekend, how it helped him understand his car a bit more and how he felt in it:

"I think it was an advantage for the first stint to be on that tyre, but we didn't make it today so it's a bit of a disappointment and I look forward to tomorrow. I'll try to deliver more"

"I learn from every run I do in this car. Today from FP3 to Quali we had a little mechanical issue that helped me to understand a lot the car"

"Qualifying was going better, but we had a lot of issues with the traffic and so on, that we had to figure out, it's been a difficult weekend"

"You know, you only get one single lap, the wind is different, tyres are totally gone, so it hasn't been an easy weekend, but Quali helped me figure out where I am with the car a little bit more" Checo stated.

He also referred to tomorrow's race and pointed out where his team should focus to minimize the damage and try to take home some important points:

"Tomorrow we'll need a good strategy, a good start, we got a good race pace so tomorrow we should be able to come trhough the field and score some good points" he said.

He's shown during the years his consistency and his ability to manage tyres in an excellent way, so tomorrow's battle in the midfield remains open.
