George Russell's move to the German team is a topic that fans and media have speculated on a lot over the course of the last season.

With Valtteri Bottas' one-year contract and Lewis Hamilton's uncertainty about the future, Mercedes seemed to everyone ready to start a new cycle with a talented young driver like George Russell.

Last year in Bahrain, during the Sakhir GP, where the British driver replaced the 7 times champions to be Lewis Hamilton, everyone realized that the 23-year-old has the makings of a champion. The tire mess at the Mercedes garage did not, in fact, overshadow the great performance of the current Williams driver, which left everyone speechless.

From the start of the race, that everyone thought would've put him in a spot, to the cold blood shown in the melee with Bottas and managing a race as a leader. A victory that was easily within his reach was unfortunately denied him by Mercedes, who, due to a radio problem in the pits, messed up at the double stop during the safety car, sending him back to the track with a tire that wasn't actually his one. A huge mistake that totally destroyed both driver's races.

Beyond that mistake and the misfortune for a second puncture, George Russell confirmed what everyone knew by now: that the young Brit would only need a "real" car to shine.

In an interview with the PA news agency, in view of the upcoming 2021 season that will start on the same track he did his debut with the Mercedes single-seater, Gerorge Russell talked about himself, also defining what is his relationship with the team from Brackley, which he defined as his "second family".

"My relationship with Mercedes and (team principal) Toto Wolff is stronger than it has ever been. They know the situation. They know I want to be fighting for victories and championships. They saw what I could do in Bahrain " the 23 year-old from King's Lynn, United Kingdom, said.

"I need to focus on myself and I don't need to be badgering them. In the past I have always tried to make things happen, but it is different now. I have been with Mercedes for six years, they are my second family, and if it happens it will happen naturally" he added.

He also said that he expects decision on Mercedes seat to be made by summer:

"It will not be any longer than the summer break (in August) for all parties involved - Mercedes, Williams and for all the drivers - so it is fair on everybody"

“And unless anything catastrophic happens in the coming six months, Mercedes know the position I am in and the position they are in. I am getting stronger year-on-year and I believe I am at a level and ready to be fighting for wins and world championships. But we will have to see. Formula One is a funny business and I don't take anything for granted." he concluded.
