F1 | Binotto pleased with Ferrari's progress over the winter
Scuderia Ferrari's team boss Mattia Binotto has expressed his hope that Ferrari's straight-line speed issue that dogged the team over 2020 is now over.
Ferrari's team principal Mattia Binotto is hopeful that Ferrari's straight-line issue that caused the team to slump to sixth in the constructor's championship in 2020 will no longer be a disadvantage
The Maranello based outfit who have been testing the team's new SF21 in Bahrain over the weekend has produced a new power unit over the winter break, which has set to produce an extra 50bhp compared to its predecessor.
Binotto, who will not be at all of the race weekends this year, has spotted improvements in the new power unit's performance over the three days when speaking to Motorsport.com.
"We know how the engine is running at the dyno, but when you fit it on the car, what you may have a look on track is the speed, and eventually the relative speed to the others, when we were here last year in Bahrain for the race in qualifying, we've been very slow here on the straights. We didn't enter into Q3, and we were very distant from the pole."
"Now, if I look at the data, I think at least on the speed, on the straight, the speed is alright. There does not seem to be such a disadvantage as it was last year; we know it's not only power, it's the drag of the car as well, as we often said last year. But let me say that both contributed to improving our speed on the straights, today we feel it is not any more a disadvantage."
Ferrari has also focused on developing the car's rear end over the winter, with the team happy with the results so far.
"We tried to develop as much as we could the back of the car; I think what was more important for us is to understand the correlation with the wind tunnel and the simulations, so gathering data and comparing."
