F1 | Fernando Alonso involved in road accident, awaiting further medical examinations tomorrow
Fernando Alonso has suffered a major setback after it has been announced that he was involved in a cycling accident in Switzerland.
Two-time World Champion Fernando Alonso could potentially miss the start of the 2021 Formula 1 season after being hit by a car whilst on a bicycle ride in Switzerland.
The two-time World Champion who was due to return to the sport after a three-year absence with the team; the Alpine driver was reportedly hit on a road near Lugano according to Italian newspaper La Gazetta Dello Sport.
Alonso was immediately rescued and taken to hospital in the local area with the Italian newspaper also reporting a possible fracture.
In a statement issued Alpine F1 Team confirmed that the Gazetta's rumours about the accident were true.
"Alpine F1 Team can confirm that Fernando Alonso has been involved in a road accident while cycling in Switzerland."
"Fernando is conscious and well in himself and is awaiting further medical examinations tomorrow morning."
"Alpine F1 Team will not make any further statement at this point in time. Further updates will be given tomorrow."
Pre-season testing is due to begin in just over a month's time in Bahrain where Alonso will hope to be taking part in it.
If he misses that, the Sakhir International Circuit is also due to host the opening round of the 2021 Formula One World Championship on March the 28th. He has 45 days to make a full recovery to make the season-opener.
