Stefano Domenicali has said that he wishes for the sport to expand to the United States for a second Grand Prix in the country whilst opening up the possibility of sprint races being held on a Saturday.

The fifty-five-year-old native of Imola who succeeds Chase Carey as CEO of Formula 1 talked of fitting a second race in the country alongside the United States Grand Prix as well getting the sport further into the US market when speaking to Motorsport.com.

“Miami is more advanced in terms of discussion, but there are others in other areas of the American country, but they are not at the level where I can say, ‘yes, they are there,’ and I can anticipate something happening."

“I think that in the next couple of months we will decide what there will be in terms of possible discussion with regard to that country, and eventual rotation or stabilizing with two Grand Prixs that are fixed. So it's a work in progress.”

The plan to push further into the already congested American sports market includes keeping the sport in the spotlight for all-season whilst attempting not hammering US race fans with news every day.

“I can guarantee to you there is now big interest in the USA with Formula 1, what we don't have to do, in terms of mistake, is that the US needs to be fed with F1 news every day."

“It's wrong to go there one week, and let's say you have an incredible push one week before the Austin race and then being silent."

“What we have is a plan of communication quite strong in the US. We need to hammer information with the right channels in a continuous way."

“It will take a lot of start-up time in terms of investment, but the payoff will be huge. So this is part of our strategic global communication campaign that we need to push this year.”

Domenicali also extinguished the idea of the sport adopting reverse grid races after all ten constructors could not reach a unanimous verdict to the idea.

“Reverse grid is over. That’s something I can tell you."

“It’s important to think maybe of new ideas to be more attractive or interesting, but we don’t have to lose the traditional approach of racing."

“I think that what we learned when we were changing the qualifying every two days was something that has burned our fingers. So we need to avoid that, and therefore now I think that the format is quite stable.”

However, Domenicali raised the idea of bringing a Sprint race to the Formula 1 weekend with their being a potential trial run at a race weekend this season.

“What we’re looking at is what could be the approach of the so-called sprint race on a Saturday, we are thinking if this could be tested already this year. There are discussions going on with the teams in the right forum, and I think that maybe this could be the only thing that could be interesting.”

Rookies could also be a benefactor to a change of the weekend format with Domenicali keen to give rookies a chance to showcase their talents due to the limit amount of testing that is conducted every season.

“We need to give attention once again to the rookies, the real rookies, today, with the fact that we have less testing, we need to create [chances for running] not only in the free practice, as already is written into the regulations.

“Maybe we can create good events, highlighting the fact that we need to focus the attention on the rookies. We have a very good number of young drivers that are already in Formula 1, but we cannot stop that flow going on.”
