F1 | Pierre Gasly becomes the sixth driver to test positive for COVID-19
The Frenchman says he’s ‘’feeling ok’’ after contracting the virus.
AlphaTauri driver Pierre Gasly has become the sixth driver on the F1 grid since the beginning of the pandemic to be hit with the Coronavirus.
The 2020 Italian Grand Prix winner wrote the following on his social media channels: ‘'Hello everyone, I hope you’re all well and safe.
‘’I wanted to let you know that I tested positive for COVID-19. I have told everyone I’ve been in contact with during these last days.
‘’I’m currently self-isolating and following the protocol set by the local health authorities. I’m feeling ok and will continue to follow my training plan from home while I remain in isolation. Take care.’’
Gasly is the third driver to have tested positive for the virus in 2021, after Lando Norris and Charles Leclerc both confirmed they had earlier this month. The McLaren and Ferrari drivers both recovered from it. All three drivers have spent various amounts of time in Dubai since the 2020 season ended.
In 2020, Sergio Perez missed both races at Silverstone after becoming the first driver to get the virus. Racing Point stablemate Lance Stroll also missed the Eifel Grand Prix following a positive test for him. Nico Hulkenberg replaced them for those three events.
Seven-time World Champion Lewis Hamilton missed the first race of his Formula One career when he tested positive for the virus in the week leading up to the Sakhir Grand Prix.
